Second Sundays at Christ Church

December 12, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Every Second Sunday we invite you to join the Christ Church Neighborhood Walking Tour and our free hands-on art activity. The hands-on art activity will run from 11 am to 1 pm and the walking tour will begin at noon! Meet at the Church for the walking tour and next door at the Neighborhood House for the hands-on art activity.

Christ Church Neighborhood Walking Tour: In Observation of Franklin (12 – 1 pm). Join us as we take a glimpse into the life of Benjamin Franklin and discuss his participation in and actions against the institution of slavery in colonial America. Recommended for teens and adults.

Put on your winter coats and walking shoes for an informative walk around Old City on Sunday, December 12 at noon. This month, we will be discussing the life of Benjamin Franklin and, more specifically, his shifting views on the enslavement and abolition of African people in colonial-era Philadelphia. While Franklin is often heralded as one of the few abolitionist Founding Fathers, he did not always believe in the civil liberties of African people. In fact, it was not until the last years of his life that he is noted to have significantly contributed to the abolitionist cause. Together, we will consider questions like, “How did Franklin participate in the institution of slavery?” “How did he contribute to the abolitionist cause?” Please join us.
