SUMMARY:Groundings: An Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Christ Church Neighborhood House pulls back the curtain on a lesser known history in the City of Brotherly Love. Christ Church has been conducting research to discover the lives and everyday acts of resilience and survival by Black people\, both free and enslaved in Colonial Philadelphia. Many were buried on the grounds of Christ Church without headstones and this research is designed to shed light on who these people were. This research will culminate in On Buried Ground\, an upcoming performance running during the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Part of the experience will also include an interactive art exhibit. Groundings: An Exhibition\, an immersive experience\, opens July 26 at 7 p.m. Through speculative storytelling and tangible peaks into the interior lives of some of these individuals portrayed in the On Buried Ground performance\, visitors will deepen their experience of the ancestors called forth. The exhibit is in the first floor of Christ Church Neighborhood House. \nThe exhibit focuses on Alice of Dunk’s Ferry and the children buried at Christ Church. This is a multidisciplinary exhibition that leverages visual art\, historical records\, and storytelling to explore the known and unknown histories of Black congregants at Christ Church\, including Alice of Dunk’s Ferry (1686 – 1802)\, who was a lifetime parishioner at Christ Church and a notable historian and storyteller. Visitors will peek into some of the individuals portrayed in the On Buried Ground performance\, and thus deepen their experience of the ancestors called forth. This exhibit features original work by artists Misty Sol\, Destiny Crockett\, Theodore Harris\, and Intisar Hamilton. \n“The exhibit provides a multifaceted exploration of Black history in and around Christ Church\, revealing narratives that have often been overlooked\,” said the exhibit’s curator Malkia Okech. “Parishioners of Christ Church included both free and enslaved Black people who had complete and whole multifaceted lives.” \nAudiences will encounter items from that time period. There will also be historical records\, audio sensory experiences\, and art that gives audiences an experience that makes the histories of the enslaved and free people of African descent in Philadelphia. \nThe On Buried Ground performance runs September 4-September 14\, during the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Dance artist Shayla-Vie Jenkins and playwright Ang Bey have developed a piece of theatrical storytelling informed by the archival records and new scholarship. \n“Christ Church is a microcosm of what we understand as Philadelphia history.\,” said Okech. “Christ Church’s congregation included 15 signers of the Declaration of Independence and American Revolutionary War leaders. Attendees of Christ Church include George Washington\, Robert Morris\, Benjamin Franklin. At this same church the first Black Episcopal priest in America\, Absalom Jones\, was ordained. A source\, from the Library of Congress claims that 25 percent of all free and enslaved Africans in Philadelphia were baptized at the church. On Buried Ground\, both the performance and exhibit\, bring Black life to the center of a typically overshadowed narrative.” \nOn Buried Ground is funded by the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. \n			\n				More Information

As the Neighborhood House Program evolves\, we hope to offer more artistic residency and presenting opportunities that contextualize our unique history and offer space to emerging artists. \nWe greatly appreciate any donation you are able to make to the CCNH program. SUMMARY:Christian Slavery (In-Person Talk)
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, historian Katharine Gerbner will examine the historical links between Quakers and Anglicans in Philadelphia and the Caribbean during the early colonial period. While Pennsylvania was founded as a Quaker colony\, slavery was foundational to its early success\, and there were many links between Philadelphia and Barbados. Gerbner will look at the tensions around slavery in early America\, when many Quakers and Anglicans were trying to reconcile their Christian beliefs with slavery\, rather than trying to end human bondage. Haro grew up listening to the tape cassettes that were played in his mom’s black Mustang. His first instrument was a black bass guitar that his dad bought from a friend at work that came with a strap with skulls painted on it. \nHaro taught himself how to play and eventually brought his acoustic guitar out east with him when we left home to attend Drexel University. After graduating\, he worked as a stage manager\, theatre producer\, and nonprofit arts administrator. In his late 20s\, Haro was inspired to invest more in his music and began training with artist and vocal coach Martha Stuckey. His year of work with Martha eventually produced new songs\, strengthened confidence in his voice\, and led to streaming online performances. DESCRIPTION:Featuring Philadelphia’s Dancefusion in collaboration with Movement Migration from Charlotte\, NC and New York City. Dancefusion presents the revival of the fourth and fifth movements of Gloria (1967) by Legendary choreographer\, Mary Anthony. Musical score by Francis Poulenc includes the haunting choral music of the fifth movement. The program will also present two inspiring new Works by company members Jennifer Yackel and Omar Fredrick Pratt. Movement Migration will feature two duets\, Revive and Untamed\, originally choreographed in collaboration with Movement Migration dancers for the Charlotte Composer’s forum\, with music by the Bechtler Ensemble. The works were inspired by Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculpture\, Santana. The duets lend motion to human interactions\, each resulting in opposing outcomes. Revive is set to music composed by Mark Lewis entitled Spectacle Machine\, and Untamedto music composed by Craig Bove entitled Speed Limit. \nAll indoor Neighborhood House events require proof of vaccination to attend. Audience members will be asked to show proof of vaccination at our lobby welcome desk. Please plan accordingly. \nAward-winning choreographer\, director\, and writer David Gordon has assembled a virtual “Pick Up Performance Co” of more than 30 Philadelphia performers for a new hour-long screen work specifically for the Fringe Festival\, The Philadelphia Matter – 1972/2020. The work is being made via remote video material shot by the performers with iPhones to sophisticated cameras – Gordon then dissected\, assembled\, and collaged this movement with visual scores and archival works in collaboration with video artist Jorge Cousineau.
