SUMMARY:Neighborhood House Play Festival
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 13\, Christ Church Neighborhood House (CCNH) will present our inaugural short play competition at the Neighborhood House Theater. We asked 4 Philadelphia-based playwrights to submit short works (10-30 minute pieces) with the theme of “revolutionary spirit.” This theme elicited an eclectic mix of creative artists using varied mediums. \nThe top 2 plays (which will be selected by the audience and our judges) will each receive $1\,000 from CCNH to cover production costs for an expanded version of their piece for the Fringe Festival 2022 show on Saturday\, September 10\, plus the use of our fully equipped Neighborhood House Theater\, rehearsal space\, technical assistance\, and publicity. \nHOW IT WORKS \nUpon checking in for the festival\, audience members will be presented with a pencil a note card\, and a voting card. After each play\, the audience will have time to write down their thoughts or some notes or questions about the piece. At the end of the final performance\, ushers will collect the voting cards from each audience member. After the show\, audience members will have the opportunity to mingle with playwrights in the theater lobby to discuss their pieces. \nAll votes will be counted and our judges will deliberate and the plays moving on to the Fringe Festival will be announced via Instagram\, Facebook\, and email. \nWine\, beer\, and snacks will be available. \nWhile the Neighborhood House Play Fest is free admission\, we greatly appreciate any donation you are able to make to the CCNH program. The Neighborhood House has served populations in need and the immediate Old City community since opening its doors in 1915. Today\, Neighborhood House is a performance venue and gathering place through which Christ Church Preservation Trust supports arts programming and cross-disciplinary performing artists through subsidized rehearsal and performance rentals. \nYour donations help artists continue to imagine new and experimental works in our ADA-accessible theater and throughout the broader historic Christ Church campus. \nABOUT THE PLAYS \nMan of La ManchinBy Nick JonczakMusic by James AllenLyrics by James Allen and Nick JonczakIn this musical dark comedy about Senator Joe Manchin\, Aldonza offers a radical proposal to feed the soul of our nation. \nHere Lies HarperBy Chelsea EatonIn this one-act\, one-woman play\, a thirty-something woman grapples with entering the Witness Protection Program. Staring into the bathroom mirror at the Federal courthouse in Center City Philadelphia\, she eulogizes her old identity as she tentatively steps into her new one. \nLife After MeBy Peter ChristianA solo requiem in five parts to honor the memory of a loved one lost to suicide. The music incorporates dozens of vocal layers and loops drawn from recent and ancient memory. The listener is immersed in a rippling world of impossible questions\, eventually finding solace in simple melodies and hopeful reflections. \nNeonatalBy Joe MadsenA woman walks into her apartment to find a half-naked masked man chained to her radiator. She has no clue how he got there\, and she’s equally perplexed by his demands to be released as if she were his captor. This is how ‘Neonatal’ begins. Taking the theme of revolution at a very personal level\, the play tells the story of where redemption can start between two people who once loved each other but fell apart over years of grief and destruction. Thrust into an unwittingly mortifying situation that shatters the ice between them\, they dissect whether they can rebuild\, if they even want to\, and what the rebirth of their bond might look like. \n \n Reserve Tickets

SUMMARY:GO AHEAD
DESCRIPTION:Have you pondered whether liveband karaoke and screaming songs about heartbreak while walking along the Delaware River can really change your life? GO AHEAD will playfully explore self-regulation\, self-doubt\, and self-acceptance through autobiographical story-telling and live music. \nThe experience will simulate a live pub event by incorporating an actual *open-mic where artists can sign-up for slots as part of the proceedings. It also pays tribute to Jenny Lewis\, the singer of Rilo Kiley—whose song Go Ahead inspired the title of the show. \n*This show incorporates an actual open-mic where artists can sign-up to perform. Spots are extremely limited (3 slots per show date) due to the structure of the piece. First come first served. \nPlease note: all open-mic participants must sign up ahead of time as there will be no way to sign up live at the show. All participants must also have a ticket. Sign-up instructions will be sent once tickets have been purchased. If you want to sign up for the open-mic but the ticket price is prohibitive\, please email jamesharoinstorage@gmail.com. \nFor ages 18+ \nCONTENT CONSIDERATIONS \nThis performance contains brief graphic language—swearing/cursing and discussions about mental health. \nHEALTH & SAFETY \nProof of vaccination is required to attend this event\, and masks must be worn for the duration of the performance. Audience members will be asked to show proof of vaccination before entering the venue. Both digital and physical proof of vaccination are accepted. Please plan accordingly. \nCREDITS \nCreator/Performer: James Haro\, Music/Lyrics: James Haro In Storage\, Director: Jenna Kuerzi\, Additional Instrumentation: Josh Totora\, Production Stage Manager: MJ Gifford\, Dramaturgical Consultant: Alix Rosenfeld\, Design Consultant: Minou Pourshariati \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nJames Haro In Storage is a music project of James Haro (no kidding) that started in 2021. He began the project underground in a literal storage room\, but his experience stretches all the way back to the short\, messy songs he wrote in 6th grade. In 2021\, Haro created the digital solo show GO for Philadelphia’s SoLow Fest\, the first in a series of pieces that features James Haro In Storage songs (“Floor Song” and “This Came From A Line”) and interweaves autobiographical storytelling. Other songs include “Crazy Eights”\, “Cask”\, and “Helix”. \nJames Haro is a Mexican-American playwright/producer and singer/songwriter born and raised in Los Angeles\, based in Philly. Plays: COMMENTARY\, A Bru Story (Or\, Five Years)\, Post-April\, Stab Play\, What It Looks Like (Or\, Something Resembling…). Haro grew up listening to the tape cassettes that were played in his mom’s black Mustang. His first instrument was a black bass guitar that his dad bought from a friend at work that came with a strap with skulls painted on it. \nHaro taught himself how to play and eventually brought his acoustic guitar out east with him when we left home to attend Drexel University. After graduating\, he worked as a stage manager\, theatre producer\, and nonprofit arts administrator. In his late 20s\, Haro was inspired to invest more in his music and began training with artist and vocal coach Martha Stuckey. His year of work with Martha eventually produced new songs\, strengthened confidence in his voice\, and led to streaming online performances. In the Fall\, he performed at his first-ever live open-mic in Philadelphia—13 years after his arrival to the city—and has continued to sing\, create\, and perform. \nFollow: @jamesharoinstorage on Instagram \n \n Reserve Tickets

SUMMARY:Neighborhood Artist Series: Kaity Lacy
DESCRIPTION:The Farmers Market runs each Wednesday from 3 to 6PM (May to November). Each week\, over 2\,000 neighbors and tourists visit the Market to shop\, socialize\, and enjoy its festive and family-friendly atmosphere. \nThe Neighborhood House Program (NHP) operates under the Christ Church Preservation Trust umbrella\, a secular nonprofit dedicated to preserving the historic Christ Church campus and strengthening the multiple communities that use it for community building\, education\, and artistic expression. \nIn 2016\, the NHP took over the struggling Farmers Market and rebranded it as the Farmers Market at Christ Church. This seasonal\, weekly offering is a much-anticipated event that attracts a diverse swath of people of all ages. This year\, The NHP plans to present a series of free performances and family-friendly art workshops that will take place during the Farmers Market. \nOn October 12\, we will feature Kaity Lacy\, a painter from Philadelphia. Kaity will be guiding families through a “paint by numbers” designed by her and inspired by the gardens at Christ Church. Using watercolor paints\, each family member will walk away with their own work of art. \nThe Christ Church Neighborhood House has served populations in need since opening its doors in 1915. Today\, the Neighborhood House serves the community as a performance venue and gathering place. We have built out the infrastructure for the performing arts to thrive here and developed the Neighborhood House into a fully functioning arts center. The intended impact is to share free performances with our neighbors to build community spirit. \n \n Donate Now

SUMMARY:Monuments and Memory: Christ Church and African American History – Part I of II
DESCRIPTION:Professor Anne C. Bailey is back! \nPart I: Zoom Webinar \n\n\n\n\nWe are back again for a second virtual discussion and Q&A featuring author Professor Anne C. Bailey on her remarkable book\, The Weeping Time: Memory and the Largest Slave Auction in American History. Bailey’s book\, published by Cambridge University Press in 2017\, focuses on the largest recorded slave auction in American history\, where in 1859 over 400 men\, women\, and children were sold by Pierce Butler Jr. of the Butler Plantation estates. This book is one of the first to analyze the operation of this auction and trace the lives of slaves before\, during\, and after their sale. \nAs an institution\, we are committed to exploring the history of Christ Church without filters. 2021 marked our 325th anniversary and we are celebrating this occasion by organizing a series of lectures about and concerned with the history of the church. \nTune in as we discuss the immersive research process that went into the creation of this book and the significance of the tombs and monuments at Christ Church in the shaping of our society including those related to the iconic Weeping Time sale. SUMMARY:Christian Slavery (In-Person Talk)
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, historian Katharine Gerbner will examine the historical links between Quakers and Anglicans in Philadelphia and the Caribbean during the early colonial period. While Pennsylvania was founded as a Quaker colony\, slavery was foundational to its early success\, and there were many links between Philadelphia and Barbados. Gerbner will look at the tensions around slavery in early America\, when many Quakers and Anglicans were trying to reconcile their Christian beliefs with slavery\, rather than trying to end human bondage. Gerbner will also show how the history of Christian Slavery helps us understand the emergence of race and White Supremacy. She will show why it’s essential to remember this uncomfortable history\, and ask what we can learn from it today. \nThis talk is cosponsored by Arch Street Meeting House. \nFREE but advanced registration is required. \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Memorializing Native American and Lenape History Virtual Talk
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, the United States has entered another era of discussion and debate regarding things like monuments\, place names\, and vestiges of the past that dot the landscape of cities and towns from coast-to-coast. With the move of the Tamanend statue to a more central location in historic Philadelphia\, it might appear that this is a time of resurgence for Lenape people. Almost 350 years after the fabled handshake between the Lenape and William Penn under an elm tree at the bank of the river\, the Lenape are seeing a resurgence once more. But what does this move mean? What kind of future does it anticipate for both Lenape and non-Lenape people? In this talk Harvard Professor Morgan Ridgway will explore what efforts to memorialize Native American and Lenape history in particular might mean for Philadelphia. In a state that does not recognize the Lenape nation as a legitimate political entity\, what is the role of preserving Indigenous history? What are the obligations or responsibilities for public historians in assuring that Lenape people have a past that is knowable to residents and visitors of the city but are not solely of the past? Beginning with a brief history of what has become the iconic representation of Lenape people\, Ridgway wants us to consider how the image of the handshake and its implications (or desires) of peace have brought us to this current moment. Then\, he wants us to think about what monuments invite us to imagine for the future and think through just some of the possibilities that might be on the horizon for Lenape people\, for Native Americans more broadly\, and residents of Philadelphia as a whole. This is an exploration of just one of the pathways that might be possible moving forward from this moment of historical reckoning and we hope in the time we have together we can further imagine what the future may look like; one that is perhaps more honest\, ethical\, and responsible. \nFREE but registration is required. \n \n Reserve Tickets

SUMMARY:*** POSTPONED *** Neighborhood House Play Festival: The Final Chapter
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE COMING SOON \nIn August\, we presented our 2nd annual short play competition – the top three plays received support from Christ Church Neighborhood House (CCNH) to cover production costs for the final version of their plays\, which will be presented in October immediately following Old City Fest on Sunday\, October 8\, plus the use of our fully-equipped Neighborhood House Theater\, rehearsal space\, technical assistance\, and publicity. \nCCNH program’s mission is simple – to support artists and audiences by providing a platform for the creation and curation of new work. As the Neighborhood House Program evolves\, we hope to offer more artistic residency and presenting opportunities that contextualize our unique history and offer space to emerging artists. \nWe greatly appreciate any donation you are able to make to the CCNH program. \nCash bar available \nTickets are Pay What You Wish \n \n Reserve Tickets
