Inspired by artist Isaiah Zagar’s colorful mosaics at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, In Plain Air composer Phyllis Chen is working with the community to create a 400-foot music box strip. During this hands-on family workshop, each participant will create a one-foot section of Phyllis’ music box mosaic. We will explore music boxes and create music by drawing on and punching holes in special music box paper.
Chen says, “One of the projects that I really wanted to do was to create a grand music box, an exquisite corpse piece with the community of Philadelphia. This would involve people in schools, or children or adults and weaving it into something that basically became a mural to bring them from the street to the church and sort of see a little bit of the history and the story of Philadelphia.”
On September 22 and 23, for the premiere performances of In Plain Air by International Contemporary Ensemble, the strip will wind around Christ Church and churchyard, activating the historic campus. Performances are free, making it possible for all participants in this workshop to attend and hear/see the community artwork we will be creating together!
PECO Family Jams are Philadelphia's Magic Gardens' one-of-a-kind, family-oriented programs, featured every second Sunday of the month between 12:00 and 4:00 PM. Drop in with the whole gang for a variety of hands-on workshops and free kid-friendly tours at 1:00 PM & 2:30 PM.
Major support for In Plain Air has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage with additional support from Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation and Arthur Judson Foundation.
